Day Two Completed of the Mike Stewart International Pipeline Pro presented by Rockstar Games

Momma told me the best cure for sunburns is a nice Aloe Vera based cream to sooth the heat. The next best thing is sitting down on the beach at Pipeline, watching the sunset, knowing that you just witnessed some of the best wave riding ever performed at the Mike Stewart International Pipeline Pro presented by Rockstar Games.

The day started off with the final round of qualifying, a first in the events history. An astonishing feat by the Australians and South Africans as eight of nine riders made it to the main event. A light southeast wind and swell out of the northwest with waves in the 6-10 feet range made for perfect high performance riding.

Hungry trialists carried their momentum into the main event and knocked off 11 of the sixteen seeded riders, including David Hubbard, Shigeki Matsui and Puerto Ricos Luis Carmona. All four South Africans in this round advanced and six of ten Aussies gained second round berths. One of them, Ben Gohl was awarded 9.5s from the judging panel for a super long tube.

Day two closed with the special drop knee division. Kainoa McGee, Kyle Maligro, Thomas Richard and defending world champion Tyson Williams performed big snaps, pulled in to some clean tubes on waves totally conducive to high performance drop knee. The unique format allows each rider to surf two times. They are scored on their two best waves from each heat. The rider with the best four scores will take home the title.

A couple new developments took place during the day. First, all arrangements to the after contest party have been done. It will take place on the 20th of January at World Caf. We will also be broadcasting the next rounds live to you via the Internet. Stay tuned for more details.
